Charlie the Cockatoo - a feathered New Plymouth icon - lived until the ripe old age of 40, mostly situating himself alongside the Tea Rooms at Pukekura Park. A brief disappearance in 2013 had people guessing that he'd flown the coop, or worse, had gone to 'visit the farm'. Rather, he had been relegated to an aviary around the back of Brookland's Zoo, quite possibly due to the swear words that he had learned from dastardly teenagers. It appeared that Rehab served him well, however, as Charlie landed back at his usual perch for many more years entertaining locals and visitors alike. This Hazy IPA is brewed with Galaxy, Nelson Sauvin, Peachrine, Citra, and offers up flavours of juicy stone fruit, passionfruit and citrus.

Back in the day, Whare Matangi, estranged son of Ngarue, was given a magic dart, or tara, that would lead him to his father. After a few throws the tara hit Ngarue's house at the mouth of the river. Before the Auckland Skytower, the pinnacle of Aotearoa's expansive skyline was the New Plymouth Power Station's Chimney Stack, climbing a lofty 198m into the clouds. Situated next to Port Taranaki, and just down the road from the condom factory, this whopping structure was completed in 1972 with a continuous pour of concrete and still remains the second highest man-made structure in the country. The chimney was a flue to the power station's thermal energy, relying on Taranaki's abundant supply of natural gas and oil. Now redundant, the chimney remains in place as the only way to remove it would be to push it into the ocean.

In an age where median strips ruled and Google Maps reigned supreme, a noble band of Traffic Knights took to the streets of New Plymouth armed with foam swords, discount chainmail, and a deep respect for road rules. These Crosswalk Crusaders chose peak-hour traffic for a dramatic duel on the city's main street, dashing into battle in 20 second green-lit increments and demanding right of way in the name of noble honour and a great photo-op. Their legacy lives on in this bold West Coast IPA - bursting with piney bitterness and citrussy American hops, it's a toast to those brave souls who would give way to no one except maybe a Ford Ranger.
