A forthright, medium-bodied red, with a pronounced bouquet of raspberries and other delicious red fruits. On the palate it is tangy and well-balanced, with brisk acidity and a beautifully long finish.

It has aromas and flavours suggestive of blackberries, raspberries, purple plums, vanilla pod, cigar-box and liquorice. On the palate there is a dense core of bright, ripe, mouth-filling fruit which is supported by an ample tannins.

Upon release the wine is bright ruby in colour. There is a teasing array of vibrant red fruit on the nose including raspberry, pomegranate, cherry and plum. Spice and herbal notes, as well as a savoury underlay, add to the wine's complexity. While the palate has generous fruit weight and velvety tannins, it is balanced with refreshing acidity and a structure that gives the wine classic North Canterbury tension and pinosity.

The wine has a bright lemon hue. In the bouquet and flavour there is a complex intertwining of fruity and savoury elements. There are impressions of citrus fruits, white peaches, nectarines and greengages overlying nuances of smoky bacon, grilled mushrooms and barbequed sweet corn.

First released in 1960, Penfolds Bin 2 Shiraz Mataro draws on a rich heritage of Australian red wine blending, inspired by the classic 'Australian Burgundy' style. Bringing together Shiraz and Mataro, this medium to full-bodied wine showcases the depth and complexity that have made traditional Rhône varieties a lasting favourite. Deep crimson in colour, it reveals layers of blackberry, mulberry and plum, woven with notes of star anise, clove and savoury herbs. The climate of the Barossa Valley is not dissimilar to the warm, dry regions of Europe where the origins of the Grenache can be traced. The region is held in very high regard for this varietal and boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia. The 2024 Bin 21 release immediately captivates with a bright and alluring perfume of floral notes and exotic spice. With fruit sourced from Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, it delivers a harmonious balance of freshness and structure.
